Book Review: Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Genre: Memoir Age Recommended: 15 and up This book was an incredible autobiography by a woman who diagnosed herself with a mental disorder and then enrolled herself in a mental hospital. The book describes her time there with uncanny detail and really brings awareness to some of the conditions that people experience(d) in mental hospitals. ————————————————- Susanna Kaysen is only 18 years old when she notices that something is wrong with her. She enrolls herself in a mental hospital and is later diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. Susanna makes friends at the mental hospital, and all … Continue reading Book Review: Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

Book Review: Noble Beginnings by L.T. Ryan (Book one of the Good Soldier series)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Genre: Mystery Age Recommended: 14 and up This book was a really good thriller and I loved how while there were only a few key characters, the author took the time to develop them very well. ——————————————- Jack Noble and his fellow Marine, Bear, are guarding the outside of a house in Afghanistan, when he sees his team leader dragging in an Iraqi family whose father is being accused of spying on them. When the leader threatens to harm the family to get the father to talk, Jack feels the need to step in. … Continue reading Book Review: Noble Beginnings by L.T. Book Review: Sinful Cinderella by Anita Valle

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Genre: Fiction Age Recommended: 14 and up This book was fantastically written and I really enjoyed how the author gave a darker, more contemporary twist to an age-old beloved fairytale story. I also loved how the author captured a lot of emotions in a concise but wonderfully written story. ——————————————— Cinderella has been harvesting her white magic for years; ever since her father died. Her magical powers grow when she is good, which enables her to change her appearance, and it also grants her wishes. However, Cinderella has been stocking up on this magic just because she wants to … Continue reading Book Review: Sinful Cinderella by Anita Valle

Book Review: No Good Deed by M. P. McDonald (Book one of the Mark Taylor series)

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Genre: Thriller Age Recommended: 15 and up This book was definitely one of the better mysteries that I have read recently. It appealed to me because this wasn’t your typical ‘who done it’ murder mystery. ——————————————– Mark Taylor is a photographer, and he’s pretty good at it. It’s a normal job for a normal person, except for one thing. Mark has a special camera that shows him glimpses of the future, and the following night, he has a dream about exactly what will happen. And then it’s up to him to change it. Mark’s pretty … Continue reading Book Review: No Good Deed by M. P. McDonald (Book one of the Mark Taylor series)

Book Review: One O’Clock Hustle: An Inspector Rebecca Mayfield Mystery (Rebecca Mayfield Mysteries Book 1) by Joanne Pence

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Genre: Mystery Age Recommended: 14 and up This book was really fun to read because of how the interaction between the key characters was portrayed. However, I didn’t particularly enjoy the fact that every time a new character was introduced, you found them dead shortly after. While I understand why the author chose to write the book this way, it made me want to skip those sections and only read the other parts of the book. ———————————————— Inspector Rebecca Mayfield arrives at a bar to see a man shot dead and a person she once had a … Continue reading Book Review: One O’Clock Hustle: An Inspector Rebecca Mayfield Mystery (Rebecca Mayfield Mysteries Book 1) by Joanne Pence

Book Review: Childhood Regained (Stories of Hope for Asian Child Workers) compiled and edited by Jodie Renner

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Genre: Non-fiction Age Recommended: 13 and up This book had about 20 individual stories about children who were sold to places where they were then imprisoned or held by force and then made to work. These stories were quite short but inspiring. However, the beginning of the book had little paragraphs giving a summary of the story, but I found this distracting and unnecessary as the stories themselves were really short, only 5-6 pages. The author, however, did a fantastic job of compiling these stories and translating them, as I believe that none of them were … Continue reading Book Review: Childhood Regained (Stories of Hope for Asian Child Workers) compiled and edited by Jodie Renner

Book Review: Angel of Darkness by Valmore Daniels (Book Five in The Fallen Angels series)

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Genre: Fiction Age Recommended: 13 and up This book was definitely a fantastically written finale to the previous four books. However, it wasn’t entirely satisfying. A lot depended on this book in terms of tying together the almost completely unrelated first four. Moreover, all five of these books really had little in common besides characters and the main theme. Moreover, I felt that characters from previous books weren’t given the level of importance that they should have and the author introduced new, under-developed, characters into the mix. ———————————————- The Watchers have patiently bid their time. And … Continue reading Book Review: Angel of Darkness by Valmore Daniels (Book Five in The Fallen Angels series)

Book Review: Rosemary’s Gravy by Melissa F. Miller

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars Genre: Fiction Age Recommended: 14 and up This book was a fantastic mystery and a lot of the interaction between characters was very witty, which I enjoyed a lot. ——————————————– Rosemary has been a cook for a prestigious woman for a very long time. However, one night before a huge dinner, her employer’s new husband comes to her and asks her to change the menu. The next night, her employer is found dead in her room. Rosemary immediately becomes the suspect and is taken in for questioning. But when the cops start to believe her when … Continue reading Book Review: Rosemary’s Gravy by Melissa F. Miller

Book Review: Making it Home by Suzanne Roche (Time to Time Book 1)

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars Genre: Historical Fiction Age Recommended: 11 and up The beginning of this book was okay but the middle was extremely slow and boring. I continued reading just to see what happens in the end. However, the end was disappointing as well and I didn’t enjoy the book at all. The idea behind the story was good but the execution was poor. ——————————————— Peri and her two step-brothers, Henry and Max, are transported back in time when they accidentally put an old relic on top of a book that transports them back to the time that the relic … Continue reading Book Review: Making it Home by Suzanne Roche (Time to Time Book 1)

Book Review: The Price of Innocence by Bryan Devore

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Genre: Mystery Age Recommended: 13 and up This was a good book but a lot of the characters had similar names and sometimes the author’s overuse of pronouns made it a tad confusing. ———————————————- Ian Lawrence has been sending cryptic messages to his parents and after one final email, his mother loses it. She calls his older brother, James, and tells him to find Ian. James is reluctant at first, but after reading his brother’s emails and learning about his work, things suddenly seem a lot more interesting. When James is attacked by men … Continue reading Book Review: The Price of Innocence by Bryan Devore
