Book Review: On Writing by Stephen King

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Genre: Non-Fiction

Age Recommended: 13 and up

I may read a lot, but generally, I tend to shy away from creative writing since it doesn’t really sound like something I would be good at. When I had to read this book for my AP English Language class, I thought that it wouldn’t be useful or applicable to my daily life at all, but I actually found the exact opposite to be true. Everything that Stephen King was saying was relevant to me, no matter what I was writing.

In this book, Stephen King managed to weave pieces of advice for all writers into the intricate story of his life with such ease that I didn’t want to stop reading. He used humorous anecdotes from his childhood to teach lessons about adjectives, sentence structure, and the like.

Some of my favorite quotes from this book were:

  • “I believe the road to hell is paved with adverbs”
  • “Books are a uniquely portable magic”

I don’t really see an effective way of writing a book review for this one, so I’m just going to leave it at that, but I highly recommend this book to readers and writers alike!
