An amazing book about the four lives of a dog and the true meaning of a dog’s purpose from a dog’s point of view. At this point, I can say with confidence that this is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Not only because it has a fantastic story or because it is incredibly well written, but because it’s the only book I’ve read, in recent memory, that has truly made me think about it after reading it.

It’s been two years since I’ve read this book, and the story still astounds me every time I think about it. I also recently saw the movie for this book, and it was incredible how they managed to capture a dog’s perspective on life in a couple of hours. I would definitely recommend this book and accompanying movie to any person who loves dogs, loves animals, or just wants some insight into the animal mind.

Toby is born to his mother in the wilderness. He grows up, surrounded by his siblings until one day, when people come and take them to an illegal shelter. Toby integrates himself into his surroundings, as do his siblings, Fast and Sister – the names Toby thinks of them by.

Toby goes through the motions in his present life and the next ones as well. Only in his next life, as Bailey, does he find his owner Ethan. Ethan is a young, playful boy who grows up with Bailey at his side. When Bailey dies, he is reborn as a girl names Ellie who works with her owner, a police officer, to save people’s lives.

Again, the circle of life resumes.

Buddy, a young puppy is now living his original life as a dog in the wild. Buddy remembers everything from his past life, including the game of Find, where he was instructed to save people’s lives by tracking them in burning buildings or forests.

One day, Buddy smells a scent so familiar, he feels like he has come home. Buddy smells Ethan. Buddy is intent on following the scent and reuniting himself with his owner. Only then, does he realize the true purpose of his life.
