Victor and Konrad are twin brothers. Nobody can tell them apart based on appearance, but they are completely different in every other respect. Victor is rash and aggressive while Konrad is gentle and level-headed. The two brothers live with their parents, some servants, and their cousin Elizabeth, who is inseparable.
One day, the threesome are fighting when they discover a secret door; one that leads to a mysterious library full of alchemy books. Father finds them there and forbids them from coming there again but Victor is attracted to this dark place.
When Konrad gets sick, and no cures are working, Victor wonders if he can use the alchemy books to cure Konrad. He finds out that there is a potion called the Elixir of Life but the ingredients are impossible to figure out.
Victor and Elizabeth search out the only known alchemist. He decodes the ingredients and Victor and Elizabeth set out to find them. While all of this is happening, Konrad slowly recovers. Everyone rejoices but there is a dark secret that Father has not told anyone.
The sickness will return. Konrad is not safe and the quest to attain the Elixir of Life must go on…
