Book Review: Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Genre: Fiction

Age Recommended: 15 and up

I just read this book recently because of all of the excitement surrounding the movie and I am glad that the book definitely lived up to its expectations even though the movie varied widely from the book itself. The movie tended to take off a lot of the edge that the characters in the book originally had and I think that out of the several major plot lines in the book, only one was well-developed in the movie. That said, both the book and movie were fantastically made and I would highly recommend them to anyone (but perhaps read the book after you see the movie?).

Rachel Chu has been dating Nick Young for about a year, and he finally wants her to meet his family, who live in Singapore, and his best friend’s wedding is the perfect excuse to do so. However, he fails to prepare Rachel for the reality of his family: an insanely rich elitist family that happens to be one of the most wealthy in East Asia.

Upon reaching Singapore, Rachel is immediately seen as an outsider. By the eligible young girls of his circle, who are appalled that Nick isn’t marrying one of them. By Nick’s family, who are shocked that he brought back an ABC (American-Born Chinese). And by Nick’s mother, who can’t stand the sight of a girl that isn’t from the upper echelons of Singapore.

When almost every single person Rachel meets is determined to push her away from Nick, will she survive this trip? Will her relationship?
